Description

A stunning ornamental dish, designed and handmade by William Plumptre.

A large square dish (H8xW30xL30cm) with an intricate design showing exquisite detail and skill, this plate is gas-fired with a nuka glaze, inlaid slip and brushed iron. You can see the lines clearly made by using the Japenese Zogan technique, giving the dish a feeling of texture and serenity.

William Plumptre’s pottery is a perfect collision of Anglo pottery mixed with Japanese Zogan techniques. Having studied in both the UK and Japan, William set up his first pottery in 1987 where he built his own oil-fired kiln in an outbuilding before moving in 1994 and establishing his own studio where he still creates his pottery today. Making a variety of press moulded bottles, dishes and pots, with the use of rope and different coloured slips, glazes created from local materials, his work is then reduction fired in gas-fired kiln he designed himself.

The Japanese Zogan technique which can be found on William’s work uses the inlay of slip on clay and rope decoration on the surface of the clay which creates a lovely surface texture, followed by using wood ash glaze to bring out the rope pattern’s which we can clearly see on the clay’s surface. Creating powerful forms with a strong commitment to old Japan.

A statement piece which is sure to enlighten any room and catch any eye.
