The Crash is a wall-hanging sculpture named after the collective term for a group of. rhinos—a "crash." At the heart of the piece are three white rhinos rendered in pyrography, meaning the image is hand etched into a maple wood slab. Their forms emerge from the warm, organic grain of the maple.
The slab is suspended at the centre of a custom steel frame, hand-fabricated and textured along its outer surface to evoke the rugged, armour-like quality of rhino skin. Finished with a black inner lining, the frame contrasts boldly with the light maple and is fastened using antique wood screws, creating a balance of strength and subtlety.
Above the frame sit three hand-carved rhino figures: two representing black rhinos in rich walnut, and one shaped as a white rhino in maple. Each is embedded with earth magnets in their feet, allowing them to be safely repositioned while maintaining their grounding presence. These figures serve as guardians—watchful, resilient, and adaptable.
The piece mounts with a secure French cleat system and includes a mahogany wall spacer, anchored with brass screws to ensure an elegant, floating display.
The Crash is both a tribute and a call to action—a reminder of the beauty we must protect and the collective strength required to do so.
