'A Tonne of Ire'- Original by Karen Laurence-Rowe
Description
The watercolour 'A Tonne of Ire’ highlights the paradox at the heart of the white rhino’s existence: while these animals are among the strongest and most formidable creatures in the wild, they are also among the most vulnerable. Despite their armor-like skin and immense power, white rhinos have been relentlessly targeted by poachers for their horns, leading to catastrophic declines in their populations. Over the past two decades, poaching has driven them to the brink, making conservation efforts critical for their survival.
Karen Laurence-Rowe’s use of light and shadow, combined with the soft bleeding of colours, mirrors this duality—strength and fragility coexisting within the same frame. The intensity of the rhinos’ struggle reflects their fight for survival, not just against each other but against the threat of extinction. The painting serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a poignant conservation message, drawing attention to the urgent need to protect these magnificent creatures.
