Andy Warhol was one of the most prolific and popular artists of the 1960s Pop art movements. From a young age, Warhol was enamoured by the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, which led him to produce a series of celebrity portraits. Amongst these was Marilyn Monroe, who became an icon of American pop culture. Warhol was fascinated by her fame and immortalised her with a series of now iconic silkscreens.

By repeating Marilyn’s face as a visual motif (much like his Campbell's Soup Cans) he played with the idea of creating an icon out of an icon.
