Footprints is a Nottingham based charity which transforms the lives of children living with disabilities across the East Midlands. At our centre and through our support, babies and children develop the skills they need to thrive and achieve their potential.
We provide transformative services for children living with mobility and communication difficulties, and at Footprints, our activities have a common goal – to help every child achieve their full potential within a safe, fun and supportive environment.
Our work follows the practice and principles of Conductive Education, a holistic education approach developed to help children with disabilities consciously learn the life skills that come more naturally to others. We encourage children to develop motor, communication, sensory and self-help skills, working in small groups based on their age, specific needs and abilities.
The early intervention we offer quickly benefits young children living with cerebral palsy or other conditions caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls movement. With the help of our programmes, services and strategies, children learn to overcome their physical and communication difficulties.
Giving Our Families Hope For The Future
We work closely with the child and their family in a safe, positive and supportive environment to encourage and motivate each child's desire to achieve tasks. At the same time, we give families the knowledge, confidence and strength to cope with the disabilities their child lives with and understand how they can help.
Crucially, we also ensure our families know where they can find further information and advice, and our team give parents and siblings the emotional support, offering practical and positive advice and information.
One of our parents, who has attended our centre for just under a year, said “Footprints has made me hopeful for that future I was once grieving for. They have taught us so much, supported my family emotionally and been there for us at some of the toughest times.”
And another said, “Footprints took out the loneliness of being a parent of a child with a disability – people actually understood the challenges faced by such families.”
